Coach Fall/Winter 2017-2018 RTW: The Prairie and The City

Categories:Fashion

The custom runway for the Coach 1941 fall/winter 2017-2018 ready-to-wear collection was full of Americana. The runway featured tumbleweed and a sort of ‘prairie house’ interpretation that worked on the catwalk to create the right atmosphere. Though this made the runway seem a bit like the early scenes of The Wizard of Oz, that takes place in Kansas and still fits the theme so I would call that a win.

The collection was interesting and fun, and the tumbleweed was a fun little reminder of the theme and the setup, the inspiration that created the collection. The use of duck print and fringe were expected considering the theme, but were fortunately not overused.

Coach is iconic, there is no doubt about that. The creative director for Coach, Stuart Vevers took his love of Americana to the next level as best he could and incorporated a lot of different prints and embroidered a lot of softening elements into the designs for a new look. We saw updated versions of his popular shearling and leather coats. Expectedly for a fall and winter collection the outerwear was highlighted, but in a variety of ways that was completely unexpected by contrast.

Floral designs and brilliant use of dye make an old favorite look completely new with the options of Coach shearling coats. The classic Coach varsity and military coats have also been updated with removable fur collars and tassels, and the moto jacket also has patches added. Though the patches are mostly florals, they do serve their main purposes, which include being an updating element for the bad girl leather coats, but not kicking it out of the bad girl zone. The jackets still have all their appeal, but are considered a bit softer and easier to pair with other things.

When asked about the collection’s odd description of being ‘the prairie and the city’, in a recent interview Stuart Vevers did with NOWFASHION, he said: “The juxtaposition is very personal. Of course I’m referencing New York City because Coach is a New York City brand, but I’m not from New York so I walk around still a little bit dazed by it. It’s genuinely inspiring…” Vevers continued to say: “I mean, I love the way people put their looks together back in the day. It was fresh. There was a lot of energy and creativity.”

In an effort to keep Coach set apart from everyone else, the explosion of options was obvious if not a bit overwhelming. Stuart Vevers is aware that the demographics for his buyers are changing and he is willing and able to communicate directly to them. Seated right on the front row during the runway presentation was the new ambassador for Coach, Selena Gomez, who partnered with the Coach Foundation. Gomez and people like her and her fans are the new demographic.

Vevers’ clothes under the Coach brand are designed with younger buyers in mind as well as holding true to the well-defined aesthetics of the fashion house. Designing, especially when working on new options that are a work up of an idea, can be very difficult.

Chanel’s New Bag Is Unabashedly Chic

Categories:Other Brands

Coco Chanel representes comfort, freedom and singular elegance. During his tenure, Karl Lagerfeld has treated this legacy with the respect it demands, combined with an unerring ability to gauge the zeitgeist. The result? Decades of triumphs, of cultivating a customer who believes in timeless quality, with a caveat thrown in — possess a frontrunner NOW as much as an icon FOREVER.

Chanel’s New Bag Is Unabashedly Chic

Chanel bagd can boast a sizeable cult following, that has made the 2.55 or the Boy bag more than mere accessories. The latest entrant, Gabrielle, is slated to hit stores this season. Inspired by vintage binocular cases that men toted along to races, it is an homage to Madame Coco’s underlying philosophy; adopting principles from men’s fashion and translating their ease into slick feminine avatars.

Though moulded from a rigid base, the bag malleably shapes itself to the female form, supporting movement and shift. Adjustable straps of leather intertwined with gold or silver metal allow it to be worn over the shoulder, across the body, or even both ways together. It is the age of more is more, after all.

Chanel’s New Bag Is Unabashedly Chic

Aged calfskin and a signature quilted body are a nod to the eternal Chanel aesthetic and the garnet cloth lining emulates the first bags Coco ever designed. The addition of navy to the classic black or flesh tones against white create a trio of colour options. The bag morphs into a variety of versions; there’s the backpack for the sporty and fuss-free, the large shopper for the woman who just does not know what to leave behind, and a duet of a purse within a hard case, for those in perennial search of the unusual and new. This last version offers a more generous palette, including cheery summer shades like yellow, pink, red, blue and aqua and will also debut in python for the ultra luxe-minded.

We can all look forward to the Gabrielle storming her way into closets through summer and sitting pretty and polished for eons to come. Coco would be so proud.

balenciaga Blackout City Prited Bag

Want to have the latest chic bag? Meet the Blackout City Printed Bag which is quite new in the fashion world and this time around, they are reintroducing it in a graphic/ printed version.

This Balenciaga Blackout City Printed Bag with its urban and snazzy feel is the byproduct of Demna Gvasalia. Described to be a pared-down version of their signature City line- this newest Blackout style is a new take by featuring a perforated detailing for that poised, minimalist appeal.

And if ever you wonder about those crazy doodles printed all over it, these are inspired by messages left on tree trunks. To achieve this kind of style, Balenciaga used a romantic laser-engraved design.

Aside from its undeniable appeal, we love the fact that this bag offers multi-functionality as it features a detachable, and adjustable shoulder strap for shoulder and cross-body carrying while the top handles are perfect for hand carrying. It also has a two-way zipped-top and magnetic fastening for security purposes.

This beauty of a bag inside features an internal zipped pocket, internal slot pocket, and a hand-held mirror, which is practical for quick touch ups.

For those who are on a hunt for finding the perfect red bag to own, wait a little more as the second Balenciaga Blackout City Printed Bag in red is going to be released just in time for the upcoming Valentine season. This is an exclusive design worthy of your investment.

ANNA SUI

Anna Sui Fall 2017. Photo: Neilson Barnard/Getty Images

For Fall 2017, Anna Sui's woman is a madcap fortune teller in the vein of quirky, screwball classic Hollywood comedies. She's throwing on every print and velvet she has in her closet — and if she's a fan of Sui, that's quite a lot of each — and heading out in search of spirits. Underneath all those layers, though, was a romantic vibe. I loved the frilly, high neckline of this babydoll dress paired with an embroidered cape. And there were a number of glittery platform wedges that I wanted to steal from the models — I don't know that I believe in ghosts, but I do believe in Sui's love of sparkle. —Tyler McCall

BIBHU MOHAPATRA

Bibhu Mohapatra Fall 2017. Photo: Imaxtree

For fall 2017, Bibhu Mohapatra celebrated the empowered woman who doesn't need a man to define her, dammit. Taking inspiration from bold character Vanda from the 2010 play-within-a-play "Venus in Fur," he infused his collection with strong architectural shapes and angles, lush textures and intentional mismatching. Front row guest Tracy Morgan, clad in silver velour and sequin-embellished T-shirt was visibly enthusiastic about the collection, if his seat dancing, excited pointing and approving nods were a clue. He was especially pleased with this harness draped evening gown dripping in gold flakes — and I agree. —Fawnia Soo Hoo

MARCHESA

Marchesa Fall 2017. Photo: Marchesa

In Marchesa land, beauty reigns supreme, and it doesn't matter how many jillions of sparkling beads it takes to make that beauty happen. Of all the many red carpet-ready gowns the brand sent down the runway, this pretty wood-nymph number topped my list. —Whitney Bauck

MICHAEL KORS COLLECTION

Michael Kors Collection Fall 2017. Photo: Imaxtree

After last season's riot of color, it was nice to see Michael Kors return to the camel-colored palette he does best. No one does luxurious, All-American clothes with a hint of Old Hollywood like Kors, and this look — a sleek, sleeveless overcoat paired with knit gloves and croc accessories — was a real winner from the Fall 2017 collection. —Tyler McCall

PAMPLEMOUSSE

New York by way of Singapore designer Danica Zheng presented her third Pamplemousse collection to celebrate female empowerment and also create elevated, luxurious updates on everyday separates. She also put a daytime twist on lingerie dressing, like a lace-ruffle-trimmed slip-style dress and this bustier-referential cutout dress with contrasting silk and corduroy textures. —Fawnia Soo Hoo

RALPH LAUREN

Ralph Lauren Fall 2017. Photo: Imaxtree

I'm pretty sure I'm going to be talking about Ralph Lauren's second "see now, buy now" runway show for the rest of my life. The company brought in thousands and thousands of orchids to line the walls of its Madison Avenue store, and the place smelled and looked like a secret garden. Its clothes were, as always, a treat; of its section of gowns that closed out the show, this Oscar-bound purple number would look fantastic on any red carpet. —Maura Brannigan

THOM BROWNE

Thom Browne Fall 2017. Photo: Imaxtree

Thom Browne Fall 2017. Photo: Imaxtree

Thom Browne's collection was particularly heavy on the menswear influences — one coat even read "it's too cold for a dress" — and this colorful take on a suit with a white puffer jacket is cheerful and clever. —Alyssa Vingan Klein

While a classic tweed overcoat could easily be boring, this version with colorful thread, fringed hems and a striped lining that peeked out as the model walked was anything but. A delightful piece like this is a wonderful antidote for a drab winter wardrobe. —Alyssa Vingan Klein

YEEZY

Yeezy Season 5. Photo: Yeezy

Something about the closing look from Yeezy Season 5 really spoke to me. Maybe it's because I aspire to wearing perfectly slouchy fisherman sweaters like Georgia Fowler does here; maybe it's the proportions that make the oversize, metallic puffer not look like it's eating the model; maybe it's the mix of textures and the tonal color palette. Either way, I wish I had this entire outfit in my closet right now. —Alyssa Vingan Klein
