In recent memory, Kate Spade's aesthetic has always been one of quirky cleanliness. Edgy prep, irreverent femininity, whatever you want to call it--Kate Spade is traditionally ladylike and youthful, but not without self-awareness of the tropes into which it plays. For Fall 2017, though, the brand has dialed back the jokes just a bit for bags that are simple, classic and more or less seasonless.
If you like the funnier side of Kate Spade, don't despair; there are still some cute clutches, including one in the shape of a matryoshka. The collection's clothes are also impressively luxe, with a rich mixture of prints, textures and saturated colors. Some of the line's florals make the jump to the bags by way of neat embroideries, but on average, the bags are simple leather shapes that women who shop in Spade's price range will find useful for a lot of different occasions. Best of all, none of them will look especially dated after a season or two. Check out the collection below.

A look from Kate Spade's Fall 2017 collection.
I spent most of my day Thursday asking former colleagues and industry friends if they were going to Kate Spade New York's presentation, held Friday morning at the Russian Tea Room. After the brand's Fall 2016 event at Rockefeller Center's historic Rainbow Room last February (at which Chantal, Tyler and I loitered for no less than a full hour), the consensus was this: We a) had missed Kate Spade's delightful shindigs when it sat out the Spring 2017 calendar, and b) were excited to see what tricks the label had up its sleeve.
And after a year of build up with our expectations being about as steep as they could be — Kate Spade's last presentation had fries, you see! — its return did not disappoint. The brand had commandeered the Russian Tea Room's entire four floors, with waiters distributing caviar and dispersing flutes of champagne. The space was sumptuous, and for Fall 2017, the clothes fit right in. Velvets, leopard prints and deep florals were seen in nearly every look, combined with the ladylike detailing (like pearl embellishments, leather driving gloves and pussy bow neckties) that help to distinguish Kate Spade's ready-to-wear from its competitors. The brand embraced the venue's theme, too, with a minaudière in the shape of a Russian Matryoshka doll and oversized fur hats.
The retailer's New York Fashion Week homecoming came with a bonus: In addition to showing its standard off-season wears, Kate Spade also included a number of looks from its Spring 2017 collection. As chief creative officer Deborah Lloyd told Fashionista in August, the brand has a broader plan to better align itself with the consumer calendar. "You can see the total vision of what we create," said Lloyd, describing her reasoning for showing two seasons in one. "The reason for that is really to keep everybody happy. We're a brand that likes to keep everybody happy." Kate Spade's "see now, buy now" offerings ventured to Morocco, with pompom-adorned sweaters, dusty rose prints and no shortage of tassels. (For the record: "Tassels are the new bows," Lloyd wrote.)
It was a lot to take in, especially when paired with the space's tight hallways and busy crowds, but we certainly can't knock showgoers's desire to hang out in a place so rich, in all aspects of the word.

Here in New York, we're just beginning to cruise into the worst phase of the season's cold weather, and that's the nicest time of year to see some color. Around now, the city turns into a sea of black wool or nylon coats, and remains that way until at least March, so the Mexico City-inspired reds and pinks of Kate Spade's Pre-Fall 2017 bags were exactly what I wanted to lay my eyes on this morning.
The Mexican aesthetic flourishes of this collection aren't hard to spot, but there's at least one other influence that jumped out at me: Kate Spade is introducing a design that looks a heck of a lot like the now-discontinued Dior Bar Bag. While it's a little too similar for my tastes, it is a great-looking bag that Dior has chosen to retire, and this much less expensive version will surely find a lot of excited owners who never knew about the Dior version to begin with.

I hosted an event at Moon and Lola for the Southern Blog Society‘s North Carolina blogger meet up a few days ago. It was a fun event where I was surrounded by beautiful jewelry and sweet girls! I wanted to be comfortable but still stylish at the event, so I ended up wearing this outfit. I’ve tried to be better about shopping my closet lately, so I pulled out this striped blazer that I had gotten at J.Crew last year! I loved the way it looked with more casual pieces though I haven’t worn it much! I also added my oh-so-comfortable floral print flats to the outfit for a little print mixing.

I’m always on the lookout for bags that look more expensive than they are. That can be a hard thing to pull off, with ever-rising leather prices and executive boards that expect high margin percentages, so when it happens, it makes my day. If you’re looking for a solid work bag that looks professional and sophisticated without a price tag higher than your monthly rent, look no further than the Kate Spade Alice Street Adriana Satchel.
They key to this bag’s expensive look is how sharp it is. It’s got plenty of structure, uncluttered lines and a color combination that accents its shape while leaving it totally work-appropriate, even in an extremely conservative office environment. It’s capped off with just enough gleaming silver hardware, including a front lock that’s reminiscent of closures commonly seen on both Louis Vuitton and Prada bags, which goes a long way toward elevating it into expensive-looking territory.
If the old adage about the wisdom dressing for the job you want and not the one you have has any truth to it, this bag is exactly the kind of thing that a recent grad with her first office job needs on her arm. It wouldn’t be too shabby for a not-so-recent grad, either.
